This film is much better than its sequel The Day After Tomorrow

  • Review by Will Steele ★★★★

I call this Goldilocks Italian Style because the first part is a tad repetitive, the second part is too short, and the third part is just right.

Yesterday I had no idea how much I would love this film, Today I was delighted when it entered my life, and Tomorrow I'll be grateful for its existence.

A 60s Italian comedy starring Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren, directed by Vittorio De Sica. How could one not fall in love with Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow?

Top 100 Directors Challenge: 33. Vittorio De Sica

In 1963, Italian chic was most definitely a thing, and the magical gaze held between Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni is evidence that at this very moment, the beautiful people were more beautiful than ever. What an absolute stunner this is.

A bright light in the neorealist movement, De Sica delivered some of Italy's very best and his work here with two of the countries greatest actors is testament to his craft. Smooth as silk with a terrifically Mediterranean feel, Ieri, oggi, domani is a sweet and funny film to sink into and make the troubles of the world disappear for a while. Lovely.

The synopsis tells this as 'Three tales of…

  • Review by maneleeo ★★★★

Marcello Mastroianni and Sofia Loren have so much chemistry together in all their films that is crazy. Vittorio de Sicca makes use of his neo-realism and transforms it in a comedy for the people, using the two italian stars. It provides with humorous takes on the many elements of italian society, concerning the poor, the wealthy, religion and the core of it all, sex.

The first segment is probably my favourite, but the last one, with Marcello howling like a wolf did remind me of the Looney Tunes' wolves when they got crazy about women.

  • Review by luvi ★★★★ 2

Lovable, funny, iconic. And it would have been on its own for a while.

So why a year after this De Sica decided it was time for another comedy starring these two is just beyond me... I mean they're both great and i understand wanting to explore the class issue -and more- with slightly less carefree tones than the ones we get here, but isn't it awful how often great directors have preferred to replicate images of the past instead of creating new ones?

P.S. im thinking now that he might have simply chosen to go twice with a safer film, an easily popular hit to save his ass from the gambling habits he developed, but still. Sad how he often merely recycled his talent...
