Can I recycle shredded cardboard? ›

Any cardboard has food stains on it - such as pizza boxes, food trays or takeaway cartons' can't be recycled. Most types of cardboard waste can be shredded into chips or perforated (cut into long strips) and used for packaging. The packaging can then be reused or recycled again.

Pay As You Throw - Summit County

Pay As You Throw (PAYT) is a program suited for residential customers with curbside collection with individual bins or carts. Households are charged for their garbage collection according to the amount of waste generated.

This is because: Shredding paper weakens it; It could pose problems at paper mills e.g. maintenance and fire hazard issues.

All types of cardboard can be recycled except if they're coated in wax. Recycle corrugated cardboard when possible.

Shredded paper can be recycled curbside but must be placed inside of a paper or recyclable plastic bag, then the bag must be stapled or taped closed.

Avoid wrapping the broken glass in newspaper and chucking it into your bin bag ready to hit the recycling bin. The glass will cut through the paper. The safest way to dispose of your broken glass is to place it inside a paper bag or cardboard box (a cereal box is fine).

Before recycling your cardboard, make sure you remove any non-cardboard items from inside the box. Break it down—Cardboard tends to be bulky, so breaking it down makes it a bit more manageable to transport. Boxboard should also be broken down when possible.

Your compost bin should get turned regularly every few days to make sure that it is blended and the shredded cardboard goes through the composting process. If you do not turn the pile regularly, you will not only get a smelly mess, but you will start to have compost concentrating in certain areas.

Pizza boxes are usually recyclable, even when stained or greasy as long as they are empty. It is best to check with your local authority whether they accept them as part of their recycling collection.

Wet cardboard generally isn't accepted for recycling because the moisture weakens the cardboard fibres and increases the weight of the cardboard. This reduces the value for paper and cardboard recycling centres. Our recommendation is to flatten your cardboard boxes and store them somewhere dry before collection day.
