I picked this knife up a few years ago at a small antique shop in a small town while on vacation. I put it away for a few years and only in the last couple years did I try to find anything out about it. It appears Sidney R. Baxter & Co. Boston Ma. made industrial machine knives, but also made "combat knives" during World War Two. They classify them as a 'Fighting Dagger/Knife'. The top front half of the blade is also meant to be sharp. One design was a blade inserted into a "mill file" handle. They used brass guards and pommels with red fiber slab handles on most of the fighting knives. Photos are in various books, Cole, Silvey etc., but I've not seen them. This knife is 11 ½ inches long, with the blade 7 ¼. I think the handle on this one is brass. On the side of the knife it has Sidney R. Baxter & Co. Boston, U.S.A. The knife is very thin, only about 1/16 of an inch, and the handle width is about a half inch. What leads me to think this is a combat knife is the scabbard. I didn't see this for a long time, but if you turn the scabbard in the light correctly, on the back it has CPL JOE R and then a few more letters I can't make out. Under the name are some numbers, which I'm guessing is a serial number.T is pitting on the blade, mainly on the right side. The left side isn't as bad, but still has pitting on about 20% of the side. The pitting on both sides isn't deep, but I think the knife was stored in the sheath while damp. The snap does work.I'm not putting a reserve on this knife as I don't really know what it's worth. I've seen the same knife, in a little better shape but without a sheath, on a antique military Web Site. The price was $950, but the person listed it as a knife from the late Indian War and Philippine War. The only difference with this one and the one I'm selling is mine has a flush pin and does not have a screw to keep the blade on.If you Google Sidney R. Baxter & Co. Boston knife you will see the above knife plus a couple other Web sites that reference this knifePersonal checks held to clear before shipping. NO sales outside US.
