What is the safest most effective flea treatment for dogs? ›

The recommended daily dose of omega 3 depends on the weight of your dog - 75 to 100 mg per kg total of EPA/DHA. Take care not to give them too much. If your dog exceeds the recommended daily dose, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weight gain, reduced immune function, and other issues.

You can use both Advantage Multi and the Seresto flea collar for puppies at least 7 weeks old, but Capstar is the only flea treatment safe for puppies 4 weeks and older.

You can also consider some of the newer oral flea control medications such as NexGard and Trifexis. Once your puppy is at least 14 weeks of age and 3.3 pounds, your puppy can use Comfortis, a chewable monthly treatment. When your puppy reaches the 6 month mark, you can also consider Bravecto or Simparica.

A: Depending on how Omega-3 depleted your dog is, you may start to see results in as little as 1 or 2 weeks. On average it may take 6 to 12 weeks to see the full effects of the product.

Please note that there is an upper limit on how much Omega 3 is good. Overdosing with Omega 3s can lead to: vomiting and diarrhea, altered platelet function (and therefore the potential for reduced blood clotting), delayed wound healing, weight gain, altered immune function, and more.

Dawn dish soap will drown fleas that are on your pet, killing them quickly. However, it does nothing to prevent reinfection with fleas, so you are likely to see an ongoing flea issue with your pet unless you switch to a proper preventative flea product.

Flea and Tick Protection for Puppies

Most flea and tick products are not safe to use on puppies until they have reached at least seven or eight weeks of age. At Plymouth Veterinary Hospital, we can recommend a flea and tick preventative to use that it is safe to begin administering to your puppy.

One of the first solutions to get rid of fleas is to bathe your pet. Just lukewarm water, or water and a mild soap, can help get fleas off your pet's fur and skin. The dish soap can help to drown adult fleas. If you're thinking about using a flea shampoo or something similar, talk to your veterinarian first.

Make a homemade flea shampoo with 1 quart water, 1 cup vinegar, and 1 cup baby shampoo or Dawn dish soap. For a small dog, use ½ cup water, ¼ cup vinegar, and ¼ cup baby shampoo or Dawn dish soap.

Oral Flea and Tick Medications for Dogs

There are several oral prescription flea and tick medications that are quite safe for dogs. These preventatives come in pill and chew forms, and your vet can help you find the right one for your pup's age. Simparica® is an excellent choice for flea and tick protection.

If chemical products are necessary for additional flea or tick control, NRDC recommends s-methoprene or pyriproxyfen, which are less toxic ingredients—but read the labels carefully because some products use them with other, more harmful pesticides.

Collars such as Seresto will repel fleas and ticks, and even prevent ticks from attaching, but they must be applied tightly enough to have skin contact. Many topical options containing permethrin (e.g. K9 Advantix II, Vectra 3D) will repel and prevent tick attachment.
