'My wife is so much hotter than me that trolls say she's only in it for a visa' (2024)

Scott Smith and his 'hot wife' Divine Rapsing-Smith are used to trolls cruelly taunting them online because of how they look, with some even accusing her of being a 'gold digger' who is only with him for a visa

A Filipino woman who met her American husband on Facebook says they’re constantly harassed by trolls, who call him “ugly” because of his auto-immune disease, and her a “gold-digger” who only married him for a Green Card.

When Divine Rapsing stumbled across her husband Scott Smith in 2017, she was looking for someone else and messaged him by mistake. However, after they started talking sparks flew and she knew this was something special.

Smitten with Scott, Divine plucked up the courage and asked if he’d be her boyfriend. The two began a long-distance relationship, with Divine in the Philippines and Scott 8,000 miles away in Texas, US.

Not long after getting together, Scott flew out to see Divine in person and ended up proposing to her at that very first meeting. They continued their long-distance love affair for another four years, with Scott flying over a further five times to see her and get to know her family.

Despite being delighted for Scott, he admits his family was wary of Divine at the beginning. “They didn’t really know what to think,” he shared. “They like to physically meet people before they make any kind of judgment. But at the end of the day, we waited four years for each other.”

After Divine moved to the US the couple began sharing their lives on social media, however, they were not prepared for the backlash they received.

In addition to the tired trope of assuming people from different countries only marry for a visa to live in the States, because Scott has a chronic autoimmune disease called scleroderma, which has “morphed” his appearance, the couple experienced savage criticism about their relationship and the “disparity” of their looks. Scott says he often gets comments from people telling him he is ‘punching above his weight’ with Divine.

The couple, who have almost 178,000 followers on TikTok, and nearly 500,000 subscribers on YouTube, are often told that Scott is “ugly”, and that he is “going to die soon”, while others say Divine has multiple men on the go and is a “gold digger”.

But, even though the couple faces a lot of nasty comments, Scott and Divine don’t let the hurtful words get to them. "There's just no impact anymore because you keep seeing the same thing over and over again," says Scott. "We're just two normal people. There's always going to be someone out there that's not going to think about it (your appearance)."

Divine agrees, calling it "hurtful" to read comments implying she's only with Scott for cash. But the couple are adamant this isn't the case, with Scott revealing she was very sincere right from the start.

In one of the couple’s TikTok videos, they go through the "weirdest questions" people on the internet have asked them. While some are fairly basic, like "are you a real couple?" to very personal, "are you sexually active?" to simply rude, "does your wife ever wash her hair?” It’s clear the Divine and Scott can take it all in their stride.

While one person thought Divine looked "very young", Scott cheekily replied telling them: "Don't let your eyes deceive you, she's way older than you think she is."

Other people write cruel comments, such as: "When you're at work I doubt she is loyal to you." While someone else added: "This girl be mad using him. Sad thing is he doesn't realise."

Thankfully, for every evil troll out there, the pair have built up a legion of loyal fans who delight in seeing them happy and in love. Underneath one of Scott and Divine’s videos, one viewer wrote: “I love you guys so much!” And another person remarked: “One day people will understand that couples don't have to ‘match on looks’, but on energy and vibes. And they give me the same energy and I think they look pretty good together.”
