This can be identified based on the socket itself. If there are pins sticking up and out of the socket itself, this would be a LGA socket type. If the motherboard socket is lacking pins, then it would be a PGA socket type.

    When seating the CPU into the socket, there should be resistance as the socket requires a great amount of tension. But you should not have to force anything. If it feels like you are forcing the CPU into the socket, stop. Pull the CPU out of the socket and verify the orientation as all CPU's have a specific way in which they need to be oriented before attempting to seat them.
