The results, published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, confirm their consistent size over millennia.

During the Miocene, northern South America was a vast wetland paradise, teeming with food like capybaras and fish—ideal for anacondas to thrive. Today, while their habitat has shrunk, modern anacondas still find enough of the right environment and prey in swamps, marshes, and rivers like the Amazon to maintain their size. But is this resilience a fluke, or a clue to their survival strategy?

And this is the part most people miss: While other Miocene giants succumbed to cooling temperatures and shrinking habitats, anacondas adapted.
