Is Django a funny movie? ›

Packed with physical comedy, bloody action and hell-bent revenge, it looks like a classic widescreen Sergio Leone western... A good film, and a crazily entertaining film, until Tarantino does blow everything up, at which point it just becomes rather silly.

Django is a fictional character who appears in a number of Spaghetti Western films. Originally played by Franco Nero in the 1966 Italian film of the same name by Sergio Corbucci, he has appeared in 31 films since then.

Nero reprised his role as Django in 1987's Django Strikes Again, the only official sequel produced with Corbucci's involvement. Nero also made a cameo appearance in Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film Django Unchained, an homage to Corbucci's original.

Many white characters act unintelligently in the film, and others are simply blinded by their racism. Furthermore, Tarantino includes instances such as the comedic proto-Ku Klux Klan scene. A mob of white characters plot to kill Django and Schultz, and these are gestures resembling those of the Ku Klux Klan.

It was an incredibly uncomfortable environment to be in... I've seen racism growing up but the degree I had to treat other people in this film was disturbing. It was a very uncomfortable situation...

The premiere of Django Unchained took place at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City on December 11, 2012, and was theatrically released on December 25, 2012, in the United States, grossing over $426 million worldwide against its budget of $100 million, becoming Tarantino's highest grossing movie to date.

The graphic violent content of the film led to its being banned in several countries, and it was rejected by the UK until 1993. It was not rated in the US. After filming ended, director Sergio Corbucci instructed Franco Nero to drag Django's coffin up a hill without turning around.

Django Unchained doesn't tell a true story, but it took elements from history to tell the story of Django, Schultz, and Candie, even if many of those aren't accurate.

Shultz, angered and disgusted by Candie's racism and extremely inhumane treatment of his slaves, couldn't resist killing him and apologized to Django before Butch shot him in return, killing him as well.

The body count mounts when Django reveals what he has stashed in that coffin: A Gatling gun that allows him to even the odds in his favor when he tangles with an army of outlaws led by the rabidly racist Major Jackson (Eduardo Fajardo).

While the content of the movie can be extreme and mature, it is worth the watch. I've seen Django four times, and it is a movie I come back to frequently. It is one of the few films that makes me cry, laugh and want to throw my remote at the tv screen out of pure anger all at the same time.

This remains my favourite Tarantino film, and let's be fair there are many classics in that particular catalogue. Django is equal parts shocking, entertaining, dramatic, bold, funny and original, to this day no other film exists that is remotely similar. It's a western, action packed love story, it really is a one off.

Parents Need to Know

Django Unchained (which takes place in Deep South in the mid-1800s) not only features guns, shooting, killing, and spurting blood, but also horrible violence against slaves. Male slaves are forced to fight each other, breaking bones and bashing each other into a bloody pulp.

Candie is a complete psychopath, and his actions are very unpleasant, which can be extremely disturbing for some viewers. The violence in this film is very over the top and unrealistic but is still hard to watch because of how excessive the blood is. The fight between the two slaves is extremely brutal and sad*stic.
